When we talk about the historical sightseeing in Berlin, one cannot go past the majestic and the beautiful Charlottenburg Palace. This palace is ordinary, so what makes it so remarkable? I was lucky enough to visit Charleston Palace while I was in Berlin, and it’s definitely something that should be on your must visit list.

A Glimpse into the Past

The Charlottenburg Palace is an example of baroque architecture which as originally built as a summer residence for Sophie Charlotte, the first queen consort in Prussia in the late 17th century. It gives us a glimpse into Prussian royal opulence as its sprawling estate offers.

The Magnificent Palace Gardens

When you enter into the palace grounds, you will be welcomed by the majesty of the palace gardens. The gardens are spread over more than 55 acres and they are well landscaped with an elaborate design involving symmetrical patterns and neatly cut lawns and enhanced with vibrant flowerbeds. Go for a casual walk and carve out a time to sit in a spot relaxing surrounded by the splendor of nature.

The Old Palace

One of the Old Palace (Altes Schloss) which comprises the centerpiece of Charlottenburg Palace is also known as Old Palace. Its walls conceal not only the dazzling state apartments, like the magnificently opulent Golden Gallery and the gilded Porcelain Cabinet, but hold several wonders more. Wander through the room, admiring its exquisite craftsmanship in terms of the décor and the furniture in the elegantly furnished rooms.

The New Wing

Some 18th century additions include the New Wing, or Neuer Flügel. There is a wide varity of paintings, sculputres, and decorative arts at the royals’ collection. See the Picture Gallery which houses works by Caravaggio, Titian and Rubens among others.

The mausoleum

The mausoleum where Frederick the Great and other members of the royal family rest eternally is located adjacent to the palace. Mausoleum is a serene and solemn site to honour the important personalities of the Prussian history.
