Hence there is something special for each month in the city in Berlin. Whether you’re traveling in spring with the cherry blossoms in bloom or in winter which offers a visit to a Christmas market, you’ll find something to enjoy whatever the time of year. So let’s walk through Berlin’s seasons and see what you will expect each month.
January – March: Winter Wonder
However, Berlin is cold and snowy in the winter, but that’s not a reason to stay indoors. Take a walk around the city with its amazing parks covered with a superb snow! Large trees and frozen lakes are just some of the things that make Berlin’s Tiergarten a winter wonderland of the biggest scale. Make sure you go to see the most famous Brandenburg Gate with a sprinkling of snow.
During January, Berlin also hosts numerous Christmas markets. Enjoy the holiday spirit and sample some tasty delights such as glühwein (mulled wine) and warm yourself with crackling fire pits in these markets. Winter World at Potsdamer Platz is the place not to be missed where you will be able to ice skate and look out a gorgeous view of the city.
April – June: Spring Blooms
Come spring and Berlin blooms with color as flowers blossom and leaves return to green. April brings cherry blossoms! The apex of their blooming can be seen in the Gardens of the World in the Kirschblütenallee or in the center of the Lustgarten near the Berlin Cathedral. Picnics in parks, and walking by the banks of the Spree River are the perfect things to do.
Labor Day in Berlin takes place in May, and one of the events is the Myfest street festival in Kreuzberg. Take part in the lively atmosphere, enjoy live music, taste international cuisine and take in the community feel. The people celebrate the Carnival of Cultures, a multi-cultural festival with parades, music, and all types of food from all around the world, at the beginning of June.
July – September: Summer Vibes
By summer in Berlin the city really wakes up. Full advantage of some long sunny days and wander on the city’s open spaces. Go to Tempelhofer Feld, a park that used to be an airport where you can take a kite to or have a barbecue with friends. Visit the Mauerpark every Sunday for its busy flea market and fun karaoke sessions, or alternatively, go elsewhere.
In August Berlin hosts the International Beer Festival where you can sample a huge variety of Irish and international brews. And sip your beer and listen to live music, eat street food. The Berlin Marathon, of course, is the one in September, which is a world famous event which draws the runners from all over the world. Cheer on the crowds and take in the zeal of the participants.
October – December: Festive Delights
Berlin takes in the festive season with open arms as the temperature drops. From October visit the city’s pumpkin festivals, you will also be able to take in the changing colors of the foliage in Treptower Park and the Volkspark Friedrichshain and in the many parks scattered around the city. The Christmas season begins in November with the appearance of few markets all over the city.
Berlin is MAGICAL this time of the year. From the street comes the smell of delicious food and mulled wine, and everything is decorated with lights. Go to the Gendarmenmarkt (a must visit Christmas market) or to the traditional market inside Charlottenburg Palace. Make sure to sample delicious Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and enjoy the handcrafted items.
