Traveling by oneself can be an exhilarating and freeing thing. Some of the benefits of exploring a new city, being in the throes of its culture, and meeting new people. Still, if you are traveling alone, safety is certainly an issue. But in this blog post, I will describe the safety of traveling alone in Berlin.
1. Low Crime Rate
Generally Berlin is seen as a safe city for solo travelers. Crime in the city is low compared with the other major European cities. However, by Mitte, Prenzlauer Bog, and Charlottenburg, which are tourist areas, security is well deployed and security personnel is dominant. While violent crime is not out of the question, the chances of it happening are rather low and therefore Berlin is a popular destination for solo travelers.
2. Safe Public Transportation
The good public transportation system makes traveling by yourself in Berlin one of its advantages. With air of complete ease due to the city’s innumerable buses, trams, trains, and U-Bahn (subway), it is very easy to get around the city without really having to break a sweat. In fact, the public transport system works perfectly, and very late hours of the night, anyway, discouraging the urgency to walk alone in unrecognised places.
3. Well-lit Streets
The well lit streets, in streets which tourists may be prone to visit, is something Berliners enjoy. All the city needs are major thoroughfares or quiet residential neighborhoods to be secure for pedestrians at any time. Yet be it in light of that, it’s in every case better to be careful and alert to the district you reside in, particularly while voyaging all alone around evening time.
4. Crowded Tourist Areas
Popular attractions and landmarks in Berlin attract millions of tourists every year and are usually full of people. The first and foremost benefit of tourists in a certain area is that, it increases the number of people in the area, which makes people feel secure due to the increased number of people around them. In crowded areas, such as Alexanderplatz, Museum Island or East Side Gallery, as long as there are tourists there is no problem, and in the towns walking around is rather safe, although you might be stopped by a police car who just wants to chat.
5. Staying Vigilant
Even though Berlin is a relatively safe city, it’s always good to use common sense, be streetwise, and remain vigilant particularly when traveling solo. The following are some safety tips:
Lock up your possessions and have the practise of leaving things safe from pickpockets if you are in crowded areas.
Do not walk alone in dimly lit or deserted locations, at night.
Before you make the reservations, do some research on your accommodations and try and pick a hotel or hostel in a safe area.
In particular, near tourist attractions, beware of scams. Also, use official ticket vendors and avoid street sellers of suspicious deals.
Guided tours or group activities are a great way to meet other people and make you feel safer.
Conclusion
Generally, Berlin is safe for solo travelers, has a low crime rate and a well maintained public transportation. The crowded tourist area and streets that are well lit made it a safe city to stay in. Still one should remain alert and observe some basic safety precautions. However, by taking necessary safety measures and staying vigilant, you can have an enjoyable and carefree solo trip to Berlin.
