Can we trick you into exploring the brawling streets of Berlin in an unconventional, yet different way? Your luck if you’re tired of the standard tourist sights and wish to enjoy the city in another manner! In this follow up blog post I want to introduce you to some of what Berlin has to offer if you have an alternative agenda and take you through some of the varied and peculiar activities that you can do when you have no time at all. Here are some lesser known areas of Berlin that provide you with a more hidden and also a more odd side of the city.

1. Discover Street Art in Kreuzberg

Being a thriving street art scene, Kreuzberg is a very vibrant neighborhood. With a leisurely stroll through its streets and alleyways, you’ll be lucky enough to view an open air gallery. That area is a playground for the artistic inclined and hidden graffiti everywhere from large scale murals, all the way down to the small scale. And don’t forget to walk along the famous East Side Gallery which was covered in murals as a section of the Berlin Wall.

2. See the Raw Beauty of Teufelsberg

It’s a surprise how visitors can escape to this man made hill UFO, in the aftermath of World War II, called Teufelsberg. From the top this hill that is built up from layers of war debris will reward you with panoramic views of Berlin. Furthermore, the visit to the hill’s summit is made more eerie and mysterious by the fact that the abandoned listening station is to be found on the top of the hill. The place is excellent for the photographers and urban explorers.

3. Head to the Turkish Market

If in Berlin make sure to visit the Turkish Market in Kreuzberg. The canal side market is a flash of colour, aroma and life every Tuesday and Friday. There is an amazing choice of fresh produce, rare spices, mouth-watering street food and handmade crafts in every nook and corner. Wander at your leisure through the market trying out different foods, absorbing the multicultural atmosphere.

4. Experience the Nightlife in Friedrichshain

For a night owl, Friedrichshain offers something quite memorable. It is a high energy and variety nightlife neighborhood. People fill the cozy bars and underground clubs of Friedrichshain. Marlayson is a great place to dance the night away, enjoy live music performances or just relax with a drink at a local pub. Make note of some rooftop bars for a beautiful view of the city too.

5. Unwind at the Tempelhofer Feld

And occasionally in the heart of Berlin itself, near the Place de la Concorde at the heart of Paris, is an oasis, the Tempelhofer Feld, once a place of departure but now a place of leisure and play. During a sunny day, cycle, rollerblade or have a picnic with friends here. You can even go for a kite flight or an outdoor sport. It would be just the right place for a nice unwinding and a break from the busy city life. To be honest, be sure to visit the airport building on the old airport that now has a community garden and various cultural events.

6. Visit the Urban Spree

The creative hub of the Urban Spree is situated in Friedrichshain district. This is an art space that includes a gallery, a music venue, a beer garden and a street art supply store. Visit the building’s exterior, take in the great artwork on its walls, and get inside to see work by local and international artists on the exhibitions. Attend live music performance, explore unique art, and be a part of bohemian atmosphere.

7. Indulge in Alternative Cuisine

And the fact that Berlin is a melting pot of cultures is seen in its food scene. Leave the usual German cuisine behind and try something else. The Berliner gastronomic bank offers vegan döner kebabs and Vietnamese street food. Browse the food stalls of the Markthalle Neun or get a taste of the city’s food truck food hustle.

8. Embrace Nature at Grünewald Forest

For some time in the nature, go to the Grünewald Forest which is very beautiful. This forest may be found on the outskirts of Berlin and its hiking trails, serene lakes and breathtaking landscapes. Relax from the hassle and bustle of the city and relax your surroundings. For the ones who are looking for physical & tranquility, it’s their perfect escape.

Conclusion

There are so many surprises in Berlin, and finding out what its alternative side has to offer will be an unforgettable experience. Berlin is for every art, night, food or nature enthusiast. Thus, take a step off the beaten path and go on an adventure to see the city from completely a different angle!
